The Covid-19 pandemic shone a light on the interconnectedness of human beings and other species of animals.

As well as Covid, infections like HIV, Ebola, Marburg, Bird Flu, Hendra, Monkeypox, Lyme Disease, the Plague, and all human influenzas originated in other species of animals. They are what’s known as zoonotic diseases, and more often than not, it’s our own regrettable behaviours that unleash them into human populations.

This edition of In The Spotlight features conversations with world experts on the intersection between animal health, human health, and the environment. We take a deep dive into how viruses emerge, evolve, and spread, and reflect on the human actions that make us increasingly vulnerable to the existential threat of deadly pandemics.
